James Crowell's Studio
This class will introduce the students to forge welding different carbon steels together, creating many layers. This process is called pattern welding and the students will learn how to weld in the forge, producing a billet of Damascus steel. Steel manipulation, patterning, heat treating, finishing and etching will be discussed.
Each student should go home with enough steel to make a small hunting knife.
Safety equipment that students should bring / wear:
A leather apron if you want. (Mandatory for Damascus class.)
Leather shoes or boots, mesh top foot wear does not fare well in the shop.
Dust mask / respirator
Leather palm work gloves
Ear protection if desired (mandatory for Damascus)
Jim does have some “spare” gloves, glasses and an apron that can be shared.
Materials Fee: $75
There is a maximum of 4 spots in this class
