Mike Pounders started carving seriously in 2009 and was initially self-taught from books and information found on the Internet. Since then, he has studied with carvers from across the US, but still approaches each carving as an opportunity to learn and improve. He enjoys a variety of subjects and styles, such as caricatures, Santas, canes, realistic faces, and animals.
Mike says he loves the process of carving, the transformation of a common material into something that catches the eye, something that makes you smile, or makes you think. Wood Carving Illustrated has published several of his articles and he frequently enter pieces in competitions. Mike carves what he wants, what interests him, and that process is what he finds so rewarding. That is the feeling, the fun that he wants to share with anyone who wants to learn how to carve!
