Have you always wanted to learn how to make jewelry using metals like sterling silver, but felt intimidated by the cost of getting started? Soldering real silver jewelry doesn’t require a setup that costs hundreds of dollars! For an equipment investment of under $100, all kinds of creative doors will be opened to you once you learn how to use a Butane Micro-Torch for silver soldering. In this two-day workshop, we will cover all the basics of how to start metalsmithing and soldering with a torch. You will create a chunky silver chain using sterling silver wire *and* create a pendant with a bezel set flat-backed stone called a cabochon to wear on your fancy chain! For the chain, you’ll have the option to shape your links using a variety of mandrels, texture the silver using hammers (we will go over ways to get different textures out of normal hammers and how to get the best results using texturing hammers), construct a clasp, and have options to polish to a bright finish, or patina to bring out the texture. For the pendant, we will talk about what makes a stone easy to use in jewelry, how to create bezels and make interesting and attractive designs, setting the stone, and finishing techniques that will make your work really shine.
