  • Kitchen Table Silversmithing: The Basics 1

  • Date: April 4-5, 2025

  • Time: 9 am - 4 pm (hour for lunch)

  • Tuition and Materials: $305

  • Instructor: Brandy Boyd

  • Students: ages 16+

  • Location: 101 N. Peabody/ Main campus

Have you always wanted to learn how to make jewelry using metals like sterling silver and copper, but felt intimidated by the cost of getting started? Soldering real silver jewelry doesn’t require a setup that costs hundreds of dollars! For an equipment investment of under $100, all kinds of creative doors will be opened to you once you learn how to use a Butane Micro-Torch for silver soldering.

In this two-day workshop, we will cover all the basics of how to start metalsmithing and soldering with a torch. You will create a chunky silver chain using sterling silver wire and create a pendant with a bezel set flat-backed stone called a cabochon to wear on your fancy chain! For the chain, you’ll have the option to shape your links using a variety of mandrels, texture the silver using hammers (we will go over ways to get different textures out of normal hammers and how to get the best results using texturing hammers), construct your own clasp, and have options to polish to a bright finish, or patina to bring out the texture.

For the pendant, we will talk about what makes a stone easy to use in jewelry, how to create bezels and make interesting and attractive designs, setting the stone, and finishing techniques that will make your work really shine. You don’t need any experience to take this class. It’s 100% beginner-friendly and all the tools and supplies are included in your tuition and kit fee.

If you have your own tools, you’re encouraged to bring those so you can build familiarity with them, but there will be lots of other tools to try out at class as well.
